After high school I didn’t really know what to do, so I decided to get a DEC in sciences to leave as many doors open for me as possible. Around that time I was playing a lot of guitar and got in a metal band, so instead of continuing in something like engineering at university I decided to study music, first at Cégep Saint-Laurent in jazz guitar and then at University of Montreal in classical composition. My dream was then to compose music for films and videogames.
It’s a time of my life I always look back to with mixed feelings. While I enjoyed my studies, once I finished I was feeling lost and strangely less confident in my abilities than I had been before starting. I didn’t see a valid path for me to realize my goal. I didn’t think I could make it anymore.
In any case, it’s still very much a part of who I am as a creator, so I thought it might be relevant to include some of the stuff I worked on during my time as a music student. Just so it’s not all completely lost…
La brûlure
2015. The last piece I worked on. It’s a composition for choir based on a poem I wrote.
Here’s a link to the poem: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZI9zSZb87N-6-ajScIz_1Ru7HT2vlUde/view?usp=sharing
Passe-temps
A piece for orchestra that was played during a concert in support of the (in)famous 2012 student strikes.
Après les plus vieux vertiges
A piece for piano and voice. Based on a poem by Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau.
Le vieil homme et la montage
A piano piece that was meant to be a tribute to Debussy.
Super Astro Warrior (Gameplay)
A piece I made for a videogame. It’s got some production/sound problems but I still think it’s fun.
Super Astro Warrior (Menu)
Another piece for the same game.
Élément P
An electroacoustic piece I made while I was still studying mixed composition (I transitioned to instrumental composition after my second year in university). It’s a weird one but it has a special place in my heart.
Silare
Another electroacoustic piece. I don’t remember what the title means. It’s another weird one.
Le fou est dans sa bouche
A piece for string quartet based on the twelve-tone technique.
Manifestation
A piece for brass quintet. This one’s a simulation so the sound quality’s pretty bad but I like it quite a bit.
Le sentier
A piece for orchestra. This is a simulation again and the sound might even be worse than the last one. It’s way too long for what it is but it has some parts I like a lot.
